NL: De Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenares Ruth Sacks (°1977, ZA) presenteert de eerste van een serie werken waarin de complexe verhouding tussen de esthetiek van het modernisme en die van het kolonialisme wordt onderzocht. In haar werk creëert Sacks patronen die refereren naar de Belgische proto-modernistische Art Nouveau beweging en authentieke Congolese prints afkomstig uit het (post-)koloniale tijdperk. Hiermee wil ze reflecteren over de intercontextuele aspecten van patronen en motieven, hun afkomst en hun actuele betekenis.
In Open Endings wordt de periode van de Art Nouveau beweging in België aangewend om een tijd te markeren waarin de vroeg modernistische esthetiek in functie stond van een nationale identiteitsontwikkeling. Sacks ontsluit een verband tussen deze esthetische kenmerken en Koning Leopold II’s koloniale regime in Afrika.
Dit thema is geïnitieerd in het kunstenaarsboek Twenty Thousand Leagues Under Seas (2013). Net als bij de andere werken die te zien zijn in Open Endings, borduurt de kunstenares voort op de specifieke kenmerken van de Art Nouveau-beeldtaal en de historische links met Congo. Een reeks bedrukte stoffen illustreren de kunstenares’ impressies van de relatie tussen vroeg moderne decoratie en de Afrikaanse materialen die naar Europa zijn geëxporteerd. De premisse waarin verondersteld wordt dat dit vroeg moderne design gebruikt werd in de ontwikkeling van een nationale identiteit, wordt in de tentoonstelling geëvoceerd aan de hand van iconische symbolen uit de post-onafhankelijkheidsjaren in Zaïre.
Ruth Sacks (°1977) is een Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenares en HISK laureate die woont en werkt in Johannesburg. Ze deed mee aan tal van internationale tentoonstellingen waaronder in het Afrikaans paviljoen op de biënnale van Venetië (Italië, 2007), ZKM Centrum (Karlsruge, Duitsland, 2011) en Perfoma (NY, VS, 2009). Haar derde kunstenaarsboek, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under Seas, zal voorgesteld worden in België in These Things Take Time.

South-African artist Ruth Sacks (°1977, ZA) presents the beginning of a series of works dealing with the complicated interrelated aesthetics of modernism and colonialism. Sacks references the Belgian proto-modernist Art Nouveau movement and sets these up in dialogue with ornamentation from colonial and postcolonial era Congolese designs, probing the contemporary meaning of their intertwining mythologies. The intention is to invite reflection concerning how variations of familiar patterns and motifs can take on new interpretations and associations.
Open Endings begins with looking at Art Nouveau in Belgium, when early modernist aesthetics were not only bound up in forging an identity for the fledgling nation, but also entangled with King Leopold II’s colonial regime in Africa. This theme is introduced with the artist book Twenty Thousand Leagues Under Seas (2013). Other pieces in Open Endings further weave characteristic late 19th century Art Nouveau imagery with historical links to the Congo. A series of printed textiles illustrates an artist’s impression of relations between early modern decoration and African materials brought to Europe. The proposition of modernist design employed in the service of constructing new national identities is drawn into the exhibition with iconic symbols from early post-independence years in Zaire.
Ruth Sacks (b. 1977) is a South African artist and a HISK laureate now based in Johannesburg. She has exhibited widely, including at the African Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (Italy, 2007), ZKM Centre (Karlsruhe, Germany, 2011) and Performa (NYC, US, 2009). Her 3rd artist book, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under Seas, will be launched in Belgium at These Things Take Time.
