Fun with Cancer Patients is a project initiated by artist and performer Brian Lobel (°1981, US) and is dedicated to bring an intellectual understanding of having cancer, without turning it into something sombre. By looking at the reality of cancer – the smells, the annoyances, the pleasures, the absurdities – Fun with Cancer Patients explores the psychosocial aspects of cancer and provides participating patients an opportunity to reflect on their unique experiences and knowledge.
In his workshops, Lobel works with a specific individual or a group of patients, and discusses what they want or need – in relation to their illness – and then works with them to create an extravagant intervention to address these wishes. During these sessions, art is used to challenge some of the taboos around cancer. The exhibition at These Things Take Time is a joint presentation of works by teenage cancer patients from Birmingham and new creations by cancer patients from the AZ Hospital in Ghent. Fun With Cancer Patients is part of the (Im)Possible futures Program of CAMPO and Vooruit, in collaboration with AZ Gent and These Things Take Time.

Fun With Cancer Patients is een project geïnitieerd door kunstenaar en performer Brian Lobel (°1981, US) met de bedoeling het hebben van kanker begrijpbaar te maken voor anderen zonder het te reduceren tot een somber iets. Door aandacht te hebben voor de reële ervaring die ziekte met zich meebrengt, zoals geuren, vervelingen, leuke en absurde momenten – tracht Fun With Cancer Patients de psychosociale aspecten van kanker te onderzoeken en kankerpatiënten de mogelijkheid te bieden om te reflecteren over hun unieke ervaring en kennis. Lobel organiseert workshops waarin hij apart of met een groep kankerpatiënten de verlangens en noden van de ziekte bediscussieerd om vervolgens deze verlangens en noden om te zetten in creatieve interventies. In de sessies wordt kunst aangereikt om taboes rond kanker bespreekbaar te maken. Tijdens de tentoonstelling in These Things Take Time zullen gelijktijdig werken getoond worden van tiener kankerpatiënten uit Birmingham met nieuwe werken afkomstig van de sessies die plaatsvonden in het AZ in Gent. Fun With Cancer Patients maakt deel uit van het programma ‘(Im)Possible Futures’ geïnitieerd door CAMPO en Vooruit, in samenwerking met AZ Gent en These Things Take Time.
